Eckhart Tolle talked about the mind being a tool we used when we needed it and then put it away just like a hammer or scissors. People say you are not your mind, they also say be the the observer of life. All are true. Depends on the perspective.
Being the observer is consciousness. Awareness is consciousness. Enlightenment is consciousness most of the time, let’s say 70 % or more. Always being conscious would be nearly perfect in every way. And, well we are still part human which means thats not really possible. I love the statement, I am perfectly perfect in my imperfection.
I am not going to tell you this observer of life thing is easy, far from it. Awareness takes practice. Being conscious during the chaos and whirlwind that life often is in 2018, can be difficult. Osho talks about how easy it is to be enlightened when you are sitting on top of a mountain alone, but the real test of your awareness/consciousness will be at work or at home, in the middle of screaming kids, phone ringing, that will be the real test of your consciousness. Will you allow people, places and things to drag you out of your happy place, your position of the constant observer, the consciousness behind the thinker and the emotions.
There is something to always counting to 10 before you respond. Even 5 seconds will give you a chance to focus on your breath, feel the emotions and respond to life rather than react Responding to life is different than interjecting what you already know. This brings me to another point about actually listening to what a person is saying. Acknowledging what they are saying and pondering what you might say. This is the art of pause.
You will be very surprised at the feelings you get, emotions that come up, the information you may receive through your senses as you take in what someone is saying. When you are the observer, the listener and the pause. A combination that can bring you a clarity in situations that you never thought possible. It is a clarity that can bring you an understanding of what the person means even though their words may not match the impressions you are getting.
Try it, I know we all experience life differently, and of course we will. Not one of us on the planet has experienced life from the full perspective of another. I did not grow up like anyone else but me. Nor, did they grow up how I did. Example. If 20 people are sitting at a dinner table and you asked each one of them how was dinner individually, you will not get the same answer from any of them, why? (Same thing as when police question witnesses) Everyone is seeing the same event through the lens of their experiences. You can never truly know what another is thinking, feeling or experiencing. All you know is what you are seeing from your perspective.
When you are the observer, and you can see things with no judgment, then you are being responsible for the energy you bring to life. You have, in a way, cleaned up your own square meter of the planet. You are in your happy place, or observer bubble, and you see with some clarity things that are going on around you, yet unaffected by them. This also will gives you the choice whether to continue participating in the action or conversation or to gracefully distance yourself from it.
